My story
My Name is Lola and this is my story: I am a beautiful female brindle pit bull mix and two people know my story best. I have gorgeous golden eyes that will follow you everywhere if you just love me. And, I am smart as a whip. I used to be called Lova (which sadly simply means "female dog in Spanish), but my foster mom changed my name to Lola. When I first met her, she sang my new name in a song, and I hope whoever adopts me will sing me the song too. It's to the tune of Copa Cabana by Barry Manilow. Except instead of saying Copa, Copa Cabana , she sings "Lola, Lola Falanna to the same tune. I have lots of energy and love to run and play, but I can also lie down at your feet and be content to just be with you (when the energy wears off.) One thing: I really like kids. I almost got adopted about three weeks ago. This family had two little boys 4 and 6 years old. I played and played with them. I could tell their parents had taught them how to treat animals. But sadly, their other dog just wouldn't let me part of their family. That made me very sad. I have had two moms who have loved me when nobody else would. My rescue mom is Melissa. She thinks I was probably born around April 1, 2018, because when she saw me I was being put in a backyard in her neighborhood while she was out walking. It was then early June and I was probably about 8 weeks old. She was happy for me because there were three kids at that house who could play with me. But then on her daily walks she began to notice things that made her wonder if I was really happy. She noticed that when the kids played outside, they played in the front yard, never with me. I would watch them through the gate. So she started to visit with me over the fence so I could have some company! Every day she began to notice that no one ever paid attention to me. Then one day, Melissa noticed that the children were in the backyard, but she couldn't see me. When she asked them where I was, they told her at first I was at daycare. Yeah, right. Then they changed their story and told her I was at the groomers. She KNEW I had never had a bath in my life! Then she noticed that the shed door was closed and they had stacked 2x8 lumber up against the door. What she didn't know then, but found out through diligent watching was that on hot summer days when the kids wanted to play in the backyard, they would lock me in the shed...it was hot...it was dark...there were no windows or fresh air. I needed fresh water in the hot summer but my little bowl was usually not full and I turned it over in frustration. A couple of times late at night, Melissa and her husband would sneak me food over the fence. As I grew, nothing much changed until one day Melissa walked by, waiting to visit with me over the fence, but I couldn't come to her. The people at this house had put me on a chain about nine foot long! By now, it was fall and the weather was cold. In fact, that night it was supposed to be in the 20's, but I was on this chain and I didn't have any shelter. So Melissa called Animal Control. They came out and told the people that they couldn't chain me because it was against city ordinance. Then they went away and did nothing else. Then one day in February when it was 9 degrees outside, Melissa drove to the house to check on me. I was outside with no shelter, and I had no water because it was frozen. She knocked on the door and when the lady answered she told Melissa that I was never allowed in the house but that I had the shed to keep me warm. Melissa told the lady that the shed door was closed and I had been out in the cold all night and most of the day and she offered to pay $200 if I could go with her! The lady said no. Just when Melissa was beginning to lose hope, she was out on her usual walk and the kids and mother followed her until they got her attention. They said she could either buy me or I was going to be sold to a man who lived in the south part of town (and I'm pretty sure he is involved in dog fighting). So Melissa rushed home to get her money and she took me with her! She took me straight to the veterinarian's office where they kept me and gave me all my shots (which I had never had), and they did an operation to spay me. I wasn't used to being around anyone kind except for Melissa so they said I was very cautious and confused, but soon I got used to many people handling me in a day. This is where my other mom comes into the picture. Her name is Linda and she runs a pet resort kennel in Artesia, New Mexico. She is good friends with Melissa and LOVES dogs. She became my foster mother until a forever home can be found for me. Melissa can't keep me because she has three rescue dogs and one just WILL NOT accept me or anyone else into the pack. At first I growled at Linda. The only one I ever had known was Melissa! But Linda was patient and didn't push me and let me slowly know that I was safe with her. My foster mom soon realized that I just was not used to having to be obedient. No one had taught me the word "No and that some things are just not okay. She has doggie doors! What? I had to learn to go out and in but because I'm so smart I now know what to do. I've really never stayed within an actual home, so being still a puppy I probably need to be watched closely for a little while. She gave me toys! Now I have a favorite ball that squeaks, and I have found out that if she throws it and I bring it back, I get all kinds of praise and pets. But she has to make a noise to get my attention when she throws the ball. She yells "Wheewww when the ball goes flying and that makes me want to play even more! I thought it was okay to jump on her and sort of bully her around at first, but she taught me another word, "off. She would put up her knee and say that word when I jumped. I guess it's just not okay. I know what "snackers are and can't wait to get them during playtime! But my foster mom makes me "wait and I have learned not be grabby so I can have one. I'm still learning lots of things and I'm hoping someone will take me on car rides, because I love looking out the window and I am so good in a car. I'm hoping someone will take me for long hikes because I have so much energy. I'm hoping someone is patient and can see how loving and loyal I will be. I haven't been around many other people lately because Linda is basically the person who takes care of me, so it will probably take a little time to get used to lots of people again, just like at the vets. William, a vet tech there, played ball with me when I was at the veterinary clinic. He said it took awhile for me to be comfortable with him but then I was fine. My foster mom, Linda, has also noticed I sort of retreat and watch if I'm not sure. And I have to admit that sometimes I do emit a scared, defensive low growl around strangers if I am in a kennel area. If I'm in a play yard where I can move freely, I will be so glad to come to you and play with you. I'm so glad you know my story now and all of the words I know: "off, "wait, "snackers, "no, "wheewww. I love to give great kisses, so I'm hoping someone out there will let me love them and will love me just as much.
